Located about 21 km (14 miles) north of Victoria, The Butchart Gardens are a must see. The Butchard Gardens are 55 acres of floral displays, large lawns and meandering paths spread over 4 main gardens. It's history started in 1904 when Jennie Butchart began to beautify the quarry site left behind from her husband's Portland cement business. In 2004 the site was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada. Visiting Butchart Gardens any time of the year is spectacular but summer at Butchart Gardens is fabulous. In the summer all the floral displays are in full bloom and each evening the gardens turn into a wonderland of light and music. Craigdarroch Castle is a short distance from downtown Victoria harbour off Fort Street. It is a historic 4 ½ story Victorian mansion built in 1890s with 39 lavishly furnished rooms. Tours are self guided and should take up to one hour. There are volunteers around to answer any questions you may have during your tour. The Royal BC Museum, located just outside downtown Victoria, has permanent galleries, temporary exhibits, and the BC Archives all done to showcase the history of British Columbia. The displays are realistic and inviting to give a sense of a true experience. British Columbia's Parliament Buildings are a magnificent sight during the day and at night. At night the buildings are lit up with hundreds of lights, during the day it is the home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Free public tours of the British Columbia Parliament Buildings are held seven days a week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Parliament Buildings tour explores the purpose of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, the role of the Members of the Legislative Assembly and highlights the beautiful architecture and history of these buildings.
